Variety reported in March that Zendaya would be playing a "key role" in the new Spider-Man film, which is a reboot of the franchise that starred Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the early 2000s.

According to The Wrap, Zendaya is not only playing a lead role, but a prominent one as Mary Jane, the love interest of Peter Parker, who will be played by Tom Holland and first appeared at the superhero in "Captain America: Civil War" earlier this year.

Zendaya, director Jon Watts and Marvel Studios has not confirmed the role, although she is part of the cast and appeared with them at the "Spider-Man: Homecoming" San Diego Comic-Con International 2016 Marvel Panel.

The part could make history as the first black female lead to play Mary Jane.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" is set to be in theaters July 7, 2017.
