How to watch the series

You can watch all 13 episodes made available Friday, March 17, on the Netflix streaming service.

"Iron Fist” is the fourth Marvel series to premiere on Netflix.

Before “Iron Fist” came “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage.” The new show tells the story of Danny Rand, the final character coming to Netflix’s much-anticipated superhero series, “The Defenders.”

Who is Iron Fist and what are his superpowers?

According to the New York Times, Danny Rand (Iron Fist) became an orphan after a hiking trip with his father in the mythical city of K'un L'un. Eventually, he was taken in by local kung fu monks and became the most skilled student at their academy.

Ten years later, Rand returned to New York as a masked crime-fighter attempting to gain control of the empire his father left behind.

As for superpowers, the show doesn’t depict Iron Fist with any big supernatural powers, but he does throw a mean, hand-glowing punch.

However, according to Marvel, the original comic character does have superhuman powers, including the ability to both heal himself and others of any injury or illness.

What’s with the bad reviews?

Variety called the show "deadly—in all the wrong ways," adding that the show is "frustrating and ferociously boring."

Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus said the new series is "weighed down by an absence of momentum and originality."

On top of that, the comics' decision to cast a wealthy white man as a master of Asian fighting traditions has drawn its share of criticism from both critics and viewers when the cast was first revealed.

Many expressed that this could have been a great opportunity for both Netflix and Marvel to cast an actor of Asian descent for the role.

To address the backlash, actor Finn Jones, who plays Iron Fist, shared a tweet about the importance of representation from actor Riz Ahmed of HBO’s “The Night Of.”

Unfortunately for Jones, getting into a debate about race invoked harsh responses from Twitter users and eventually compelled him to temporarily quit Twitter.

Is there anything critics are liking about the new Netflix series?

While most critic reviews have been dismal, some have written that one character has really stood out: Colleen Wing, played by Jessica Henwick of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”

TVLine called Wing, a martial arts expert that Iron Fist encounters in the park, the "most compelling" on the show.

"The British actress ultimately steals the show by bringing modern complexities and watchable gumption to Marvel's newest dangerous, no-nonsense woman," a USA Today critic wrote. "Is it too late to make her Iron Fist?"
