Saturday Night Live aired its funniest political sketch in a long time this weekend with its hilarious skit spoofing the classic Schoolhouse Rock episode "I'm Just a Bill" as it took on President Obama's announcement last week that he'll use an executive order to shield reportedly up to five million illegal immigrants from deportation.
The original Schoolhouse Rock animated short explained to kids how a bill becomes a law, and on SNL, the "bill" character began to sing the "I'm Just a Bill" song.
But then Obama steps in and repeatedly throws the "bill" down the steps of the Capitol, as a scruffy "executive order" shows up smoking a cigarette.
It turns out, though, that even the "executive order" is shocked that it will be used to protect as many as five million people from deportation.
The sketch was funny and worked as political satire, particularly tickling those who grew up during the 1970s and '80s seeing Schoolhouse Rock episodes during Saturday morning cartoons.
But Senator Ted Cruz apparently took in more seriously than that, as the Texas Republican cited the skit during a Fox News Channel appearance Sunday (November 23rd) in which he slammed Obama over his immigration executive action.
Cruz said, "This is not a president who wants to work with Congress. Rather this is a president who is openly defying Congress. I actually can’t put it any better than Saturday Night Live put it last night. Saturday Night Live literally had the president pushing the bill down the steps of the Capitol because we no longer need the steps in the Constitution for how we pass laws, because the president now is claiming unilateral authority the Constitution doesn’t give him."
