A legend in the music industry has died.

Rolling Stone reported that singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen has died at 82 years old.

The news was confirmed on Cohen's official Facebook page Thursday night.

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away," the post said. "We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries."

"The family requests privacy during their time of grief."

Cohen was born in in Westmount, Quebec, on September 21st, 1934. He was compared to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. One of his most popular songs, 1984's "Hallelujah," is heavily praised and has routinely been covered by hundreds of artists, most notably Jeff Buckley in 1994.

His last album, "You Want It Darker," was released in October. He is one of the few artists to emerge in the 1960s and have a career that remained successful for five decades.

The statement said that there will be a memorial in Los Angeles at a later time.
