NFL coaching legend and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs and country music artist Lee Greenwood are teaming up to raise awareness about a common but highly treatable cause of cancer in men.
Gibbs, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who led the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl titles, will deliver the keynote address at the seventh annual ProstAware luncheon, planned for 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead. The organization is devoted to raising awareness in metro Atlanta about prostate cancer through the use of music, technology and sports.
Greenwood will perform his iconic hit “God Bless the USA.”
Dr. Scott Miller, a urologic laparoscopist with Georgia Urology, is the founder of ProstAware.
“ProstAware is the leading source of raising prostate cancer awareness and providing prostate health education in the greater Atlanta area, a role we take very seriously,” he said. “We hope that high-profile individuals like Joe Gibbs and Lee Greenwood can help draw attention to this major health issue.”
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 220,800 new cases diagnosed and about 27,540 deaths from prostate cancer in the United States this year. But most men diagnosed with prostate cancer are treated successfully. The American Cancer Society estimates there are nearly 3 million survivors living in the United States.
Friday's fundraiser will be emceed by 11 Alive's Jerry Carnes and sponsored by Georgia Urology, Intuitive Surgical, Lenz, Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, Toyota, the Coca-Cola Co., the Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition, LapaRobotic Surgery, Myriad, three squared, Atlanta magazine, 11 Alive, 95.5 and AM 750 News/Talk WSB and Men's Book Atlanta magazine.
