Viral bronchitis is what’s new, pussycat.

Crooner Tom Jones has been forced to cancel several shows, including Friday’s performance at Chastain Park Ampitheater, so he can rest his vocal cords.

Jones’ publicist released the following statement on his web site:

“Sir Tom contracted viral bronchitis whilst on tour ... His specialist doctors have now ordered complete vocal rest ... There are no underlying health problems and Sir Tom is looking forward to a full recovery very soon. He is deeply sorry for any inconvenience caused and very much regrets disappointing his fans.”

Other shows cancelled this week include tour stops in Connecticut, Massachusetts and North Carolina. There is no word on whether or not the shows will be rescheduled.

On Aug. 6, Jones is scheduled to begin two weeks of performances at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, according to his web site.

Tickets can be returned to the point of purchase for a refund, according to the Chastain web site. Ticketmaster phone and Internet orders will automatically be refunded.

Jones’ next studio album is set to hit stores in November.
