First Thor lost the power of his hammer and a woman becomes the wielder of Mjölnir, now comic book fans are having their story lines turned on their ear with the death of a favorite X-Man - Wolverine.

Yes, the fast-healing, immortal fighter has lost his mutant powers and will now lose his life, according to Marvel Comics.

The first issue, on both digital and print platforms, came out in early September.

Vox.com reports the final issue will be out in October.

So how does the nearly indestructable mutant with the sharp metal claws die?  According to Paul Cornell in an interview with Comic Book Resources, "Wolverine's" writer, the X-Man was infected with an alien virus that attacks his healing powers.  The storyline has spread over multiple comic series, including the Storm series.

This isn't the first time a beloved comic book hero has died, and eventually came back.  In 1992, DC comics killed Superman.  In 2012, Marvel killed Peter Parker/Spider-Man.  He returned in April 2014.

According to WNYW, Wolverine first appeared in "The Incredible Hulk" issue No. 180 in 1974.  He eventually became a regular character in the X-Men series.  The character has also found life on the big screen thanks to Hugh Jackman in the X-Men movie franchise.  There is no word on how, or if, the comic book death will impact the movie story lines.
