Lifetime, the popular women’s television network, is taking the growing trend of natural births to a cringe-worthy level with their new reality show, “Born in the Wild.” On the show, women who have had previous disappointing birthing experiences in a traditional hospital setting decide to try natural childbirth in an outdoor setting.

The show's premise is stirring controversy, especially in the medical community. Entertainment Weekly talked to an obstetrician who pointed out that while pregnancy and the birthing process may be overmedicalized in modern cultures, childbirth historically has been associated with high mortality rates.

Lifetime is not surprised by the medical community’s backlash over the show, but stress that proper precautions are being taken to protect the life and health of both mother and child, according to the Entertainment Weekly report. Medical staff will be on site during filming and while the locations for the births may seem remote, they will be within convenient access of a hospital, should complications arise.

Videos of natural births outdoors have generated a great deal of interest online. The video of one woman’s natural birth experience in a forest has generated over 20 million views.
