'Hairspray Live!' viewing party: 5 things to do this week in Atlanta
Escapism is important.
Whether you have an entire day off and are looking to enjoy some outdoor winter activities, or you're hoping to do something fun after work, you have several options.
We've selected five can't-miss events throughout the work week to help you decide:
Pink Pig
A ride on Macy’s Pink Pig is a holiday tradition for many families in metro Atlanta. Visit the attraction at Lenox Mall and ride through the life-sized storybook for $3. If your child is a huge fan, multiple rides can be purchased at a discount (2 for $5.50 or 3 for $7.50).
The ride first made its debut at Rich’s in 1953.
The Pink Pig is open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on weekdays.
Live nativity scene
Many of the live nativity scenes that can be found throughout metro Atlanta during this time of year are free.
In Cobb County, Mountain View United Methodist Church offers a walk through “Bethlehem,” while the Peachtree Road Lutheran Church’s attraction in Fulton County includes a petting zoo.
Snow Mountain
Grab your friends and family and head down Avalanche Alley, a 400-foot tubing hill, when part of popular Stone Mountain Park is transformed into Snow Mountain. Kids ages 3 and under can join in on the tubing fun in a safe way at Bunny Slope, where smaller snow hills were created just for them.
Enjoy more than 20 tubing slides at the snow park, which is set up at Stone Mountain’s Laser Lawn. Visit SnowZone and build a snowman or igloo, or head to the Snowball Shootin’ Gallery. A new Snowball Zone will provide a space for kids to have the ultimate snowball fight before winding down with a bonfire, roasted marshmallows and s’mores.
Weather conditions may limit or cancel Snow Mountain activities. Check before heading to the park.
Children under 16 require adult supervision.
Times vary. Through Feb. 26 (select dates). $28 (plus tax) for just Snow Mountain. Laser Lawn at Stone Mountain Park, 100 Robert E. Lee Blvd., Stone Mountain. 1-800-401-2407, Stonemountainpark.com.
Dine at 2 Chainz’ new restaurant
College Park rapper 2 Chainz is known for his music and ugly Christmas sweaters, but his latest business venture finds him expanding into the restaurant industry.
Escobar Restaurant and Tapas opens Dec. 7 at 237 Peter St. in Castleberry Hill.
AJC's Yvonne Zusel reports the restaurant's menu will include crab cakes, collar green spring rolls, grilled ribeye and more.
Dine at the restaurant when it opens this week and let us know what you think!
“Hairspray Live!” viewing party
Actor’s Express at the King Plow Arts Center is the best place in Atlanta to watch "Hairspray Live!"
Celebrate director Kenny Leon’s achievements, and enjoy the star-studded production, cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres at a watch party presented by True Colors Theatre Company.
Leon serves as the company’s artistic director.
6:30 p.m. Dec. 7. Actor's Express Theater, 887 West Marietta, Atlanta. Truecolorstheatre.org.
