Los Angeles Police officer Tony Im said Shandling died Thursday in Los Angeles of an undisclosed cause. The 66-year-old was not suffering from any known illnesses.

Shandling, star of "It's Garry Shandling's Show" and "The Larry Sanders Show," was also an actor, writer and producer.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1973, Shandling sold scripts for shows like “Sanford and Son" and "Welcome Back, Kotter."

Shandling also served as a host, serving in the role for the Grammys in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994. He hosted the Emmys in 2000, 2003 and 2004. He also notably guest-hosted “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and was in consideration to become Carson’s replacement.
