You may think a three-minute commercial in which Justin Timberlake plays a human lime is a recipe for disaster. But you would be wrong.

The Internet has been buzzing about the new commercial for Sauza 901 tequila since it debuted on Monday. In the spot, the Grammy-winning Timberlake plays a lime (yes, a lime) named Rick “Sour” Vane, who recalls the glory days of when tequila required a lime to cure “pucker face” (and scurvy). Flashbacks to the good times include the lime partying, playing pool, and making television appearances. But after Sauza 901 is introduced in 2013, limes are no longer needed and Vane falls on hard times. By the end of the spot, the human lime has tried the tequila that put him out of business and admits it’s “really good”. And so is the commercial. In fact, it’s hilarious.
The goofy ad may seem like a departure from Timberlake's career of chart-topping hits, but anyone who has ever caught one of his five appearances as host of Saturday Night Live knows that the former boyband member has no problem making fun of himself. From dancing while dressed as an omelet to putting his "junk" in a box, Timberlake's appearances on the show are always Internet gold.
Another reason why Timberlake may have dressed as a talking-lime? He is a partner with the brand. Forbes reports that Timberlake originally created the tequila with help from a Mexican distillery. After winning gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Timberlake then partnered with Sauza Liquors (part of Beam Inc.). The drink was rebranded as Sauza 901, a tribute to the area code of Justin's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.
