Firebird Rotisserie and Sports Bar

4719 Ashford Dunwoody Road, 770-804-8288

Chicken and sports — that's the basic combination that's created the Firebird Rotisserie and Sports, recently opened in the Perimeter Mall area. The same folks who own the Derby Sports Grill came up with the idea to serve an extensive selection of chicken-based dishes for fans who also want to linger over a beer while watching the latest sports action. They've also built a variety of entertainment options for those who prefer Jeopardy! to Monday Night Football.

First, the food

The rotisserie provides the chicken that serves as the menu base. Start with chicken chili or chicken noodle soup, or dig into jalapeno cheese dip topped with chicken; chicken tenders; or chicken quesadillas. Nachos and potato skins also are topped with chicken. Salads can be completed with chicken tenders, blackened chicken or a scoop of chicken salad. Chicken wings are prepped in three degrees of heat and served with eight dipping sauces.

The main dish is a half or quarter rotisserie chicken. Combine that with baby-back ribs and a choice of homemade veggies such as black beans and rice, baked sweet potato, creamed corn or collard greens. (Even the French fries are topped in chicken gravy.)

Sandwiches start with a chicken burger, an organic chicken patty with burger toppings, and run through chicken melt, fried chicken, barbecued chicken and chicken salad. The Philly cheese steak is transformed using chicken, cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms.

It's a lot of chicken, but the owners haven't forgotten there may be some folks out there who just aren't into the white meat.

"We recently added a cheeseburger, a bison burger and a steak, " said general manager Smokie Paris. "I love chicken, but even after a few days, I realized we had to have something else."

From the bar

Along with an array of bottled choices, there are 16 beers on draft, from the popular Miller Lite to the imported Guinness. The wine list is short but covers a range of reds and whites that are available by the glass or bottle.

Just for fun

During the 5 to 7 p.m. happy hours Monday through Friday, drink specials and 25-cent wings and shrimp are featured. Sunday and Monday nights offer discounts to those working in the hospitality industry. Also on Sunday, stay up late for the midnight round of adult trivia. On Tuesdays, team up with friends for trivia contests from 6 to 10 p.m., followed by a hookah party. There's live entertainment on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, starting at 6 p.m.

In keeping with the sports bar part of the name, Firebird also hosts viewing parties for major sporting events as well as college games. The bar area is lined with big screen TVs, and each booth also has an individual set you can tune to your preferred program.

After 10 p.m., smoking is permitted.
