John Singleton is in a coma after suffering a stroke last week.
Entertainment Tonight confirmed the news after obtaining legal documents Thursday. According to those documents, the 51-year-old director's family is in the process of setting up a conservatorship for him.
TMZ reported that, as of last week, Singleton's family characterized the stroke as "mild." He checked himself into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles last week after having problems with his legs when he returned home from Costa Rica. He had a stroke April 17 in his hospital room.

"On Wednesday, April 17, our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care," Singleton's family said in a statement last week. "We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues. Thank you, The Singleton Family."

According to the legal documents, also obtained by TMZ, Singleton's mother, Shelia Ward, asked to be appointed a temporary conservator because the filmmaker is "unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter."
The conservatorship comes as Singleton did not have any medical directives and was involved in numerous business projects and a settlement agreement, TMZ reported.
