Located where Europe, Asia and the Middle East meet, the cultural landscape of the Republic of Turkey is an interesting amalgamation of various civilizations. And this weekend's Atlanta Turkish Festival celebrates the country's melting pot of music, fashion, cuisine and other lifestyle and entertainment options.
Relocating from Piedmont Park to the Gwinnett Center, this sixth annual event features authentic Turkish musical performances, folk dancing, arts and crafts, jewelry, clothing and other things that are uniquely Turkish. One of this year's biggest attractions is the Mehter, an Ottoman marching band that once helped send the Ottoman army into victory. The oldest marching band of its kind in the world, the elaborate and colorfully costumed performers make their first trip to Atlanta as part of this festival.
You're likely to work up an appetite taking in all these Turkish delights, and there will be no shortage of authentic dining options to choose from. A variety of culinary options includes kebabs, gyros, baklava, Turkish teas and coffees and many more delectable treats.
The family-friendly festival also features interactive events, toy vendors and an area where kids can learn a little about Turkish culture while having fun.
