A Chance to Choose: State School Chief Candidates Debate
Date: 9:30 a.m. August 19
Description: Registration: 9:30am - 10:00am Program (Candidate Debate): 10:00am - 12:00pm Plan to be on hand for the August 19 Critical Issues Forum as the Partnership offers the chance to hear directly from the state school superintendent candidates, Valarie Wilson (Democrat) and Richard Woods (Republican). Now that the crowded field for this office has finally narrowed, this is a chance to definitively determine what sort of advocate each candidate will be for public education. How does each intend to affect the course of direction for front burner education issues ranging from school funding to teacher evaluations to higher academic standards? With the dramatic changes in Georgia' demography, what plans do they have for the direction the state will need to take to meet the needs of all students, especially from minority, low-income backgrounds? And, to spur a stabilized economy, what strategies can be used to prepare students as future employees that will meet the needs of Georgia' burgeoning industries? A stakeholder panel comprised of Kevin Greiner, President and CEO of Gas South; Janelle Cues, 2014 Georgia Teacher of the Year; and Clare Lombardo, 2013 Graduate & Valedictorian from Decatur High School will ensure that an appropriate cross section of topics is addressed. Polls, pundits and political parties will be speculating on the outcomes of the elections and what it means for the future of education. Join the Partnership on August 19 to make your own predictions. Mark your calendars now to attend this important session.
