Carol Mitchell-Leon, a high-profile Atlanta actress and teacher, has died after a long illness. She was 57.

Mitchell died Monday morning at Piedmont Hospital, according to Debbie Barber, a close friend.

Mitchell-Leon, who received a kidney transplant in 1990, had been suffering from complications after a kidney-related surgery in November 2007.

"She just never fully recovered," said Barber, who was the actress' legal and medical guardian. "She's just been ill from the kidney ailment ever since and from having a weak heart at the same time."

Mitchell-Leon was married to Atlanta director Kenny Leon from 1987 to 1998 and taught in the drama department of Clark Atlanta University. Acknowledged as one of the city's finest stage actresses, she also had a number of film credits, including Tyler Perry's "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and "Fried Green Tomatoes."

The body was to be cremated. Plans for a memorial service are to be announced later.
