Sony Pictures has announced the title of the Tom Hanks movie in which he portrays children’s television icon Fred Rogers.
Months after news of Hanks joining the film was announced, "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" was posted on Twitter Thursday afternoon.
As previously reported, the film is not a biopic, but is loosely based on the true story of Rogers' friendship with journalist Tom Junod, whose perspective changes upon meeting the TV star.
“It is finally happening, and in the best of ways: a movie, very loosely based on the article I wrote for Esquire 20 years ago, with Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers, two innovative screenwriters from ‘Transparency’ scripting, and Marielle Heller directing,” Junod wrote on Twitter in January.
Junod will be played by Matthew Rhys, who was in the FX series “The Americans.”
“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” will be in theaters October 2019.
