Theatre in the Square in Marietta is reopening next week after going dark three years ago.

With a new owner in place since July, the theater, a cornerstone of downtown Marietta, has been undergoing renovations to prepare for its grand reopening Wednesday with “Letters From the Front.”

“We are ramping up to make Theatre in the Square a significant part of the culture in Marietta again,” said Courtney Smith, the theater’s public relations manager.

Smith said the theater plans to present regular performances, which will include comedy showcases. The theater also plans to present “A Christmas Carol” during the holiday season.

The husband-wife team of playwright Bob Rector and producer Marsha Roberts developed “Letters From the Front” while living in Marietta. The award-winning production has toured 48 states and 15 countries, but has not been staged in Marietta until now.

“It’s like coming full circle,” Rector said in a release, “and we couldn’t be happier that we’re beginning our Legacy Tour here at Theatre in the Square.”

“Letters From the Front” interweaves actual letters written from both the war and home fronts (from the Revolutionary War to the war in Iraq) into what the “CBS Evening News” called “a patriotic tribute to the men and women who so bravely serve.”

It’s not all serious, though. Tim Ross provides comic relief in the story as Johnny Chastain, America’s top radio comic. Katharine Hartgrove is played by Kathleen Hogan.

Several of the original Tuskegee Airmen are scheduled to be at the opening night performance and at the first Sunday matinee, 2 p.m. Nov. 8.
