Artist offers patrons view of 'America' from solid gold toilet
What says “America” better than a solid-gold toilet?
That’s what Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan developed for his latest installation which opens Friday at the Guggenheim Museum.
Cattelan replaced the toilet in the Guggenheim Museum’s fourth-floor restroom with a version made out of 18-karat gold that he calls "America."
“In this case, the title came after (the work), and it was a matter of trying to deconstruct the object,” Cattelan told the Guggenheim. “Together, it has meaning.”
The art piece is designed to be used just as a regular porcelain toilet would be. Visitors are allowed a one-on-one interaction with the design.
“It will be a test of the piece,” Cattelan said.
This is Cattelan’s first exhibit since his 2011 retrospective at the museum.
