Private Quarters: Stylist fashions a Vinings renovation with timeless pieces

Tom and Vickie Kirbo tore their 1970s Vinings home down to the studs to rebuild it in spectacular fashion. A lush setting surrounds the back of the house, which has an outdoor entertaining area and multiple levels.

Coffee table books, a bust from a Paris flea market and flowers form a welcoming vignette at the entryway to the Vinings home.

A dark wooden chest of drawers combines function and beauty in the foyer. Interior designer Meridy King mixes antique pieces with modern designs like the sunburst, gold metallic mirror. Flowers are a simple and elegant way to add color to a room.

King loves to incorporate antique French pieces into her designs. She does so in the Kirbos’ foyer with a bust found in a Paris flea market. The neutral colors in the carpet leading up the stairs allow the unique exposed brick floor to stand out.

In the master bathroom, calacatta marble surrounds the tub. Woven baskets highlight the brown veining in the stone and serve as stylish storage.

In the master suite, an antique chandelier is striking against the elegant white-on-white design. The patina tones in the chandelier are carried into the silver-blue embroidery in the pillow shams. The upholstered ottoman at the foot of the bed is from RH, while the rug is from Myers Carpet in Atlanta.

An antique desk and chair grace the corner window in the master bedroom. Photos of loved ones, peonies selected by Shannon Dykes and a textured blanket add a comfortable touch to the corner. The lamp is from RH.

The homeowner’s dog, Bo, finds a relaxing spot in the master suite of the Vinings home.

Custom night stands with lamps from RH flank the bed in the master suite. A blue plaid bedskirt adds color in the mostly white room and complements the blue accessory on one nightstand and understated pattern in the headboard.

Speaking of color, the blue couch from RH adds a splash to the master sitting area, creating a harmonious flow from one room to the next. Brick laid in a crisscrossed pattern inside the fireplace puts a unique design feature in the room. The rug is from Myers Carpet.

The metal vase, flowers selected by Shannon Dykes and crystal cross adorning the mirrored coffee table are simple decorations that reflect the classic style of the master bedroom.

Custom shelving and mirrored cabinet doors update the classic look in the Kirbos’ master sitting room. A metallic accent pillow from Horchow complements the metallic vases on the shelves.

In the breakfast room, bright green and white pillows soften the dark tones of the studded brown cloth chairs. Nail heads on the cloth-covered end tables are similar to those on the chairs, and tie the set together.

A light wood chandelier from Boxwoods accents the darker wood of the round table in the home's formal dining room. Framed artwork and flowers add splashes of color to the earth-toned room. The artistic wrought iron and wood-topped table is from Boxwoods as well.

Custom black cabinets provide a striking contrast to the white calacatta marble countertops and backsplash in Vickie Kirbo’s kitchen. A black chandelier in the adjacent dining area provides design continuity from one room to the next.

The antique-style chandelier with electric candles highlights the mix of antique pieces and modern designs found throughout the home. A brushed metal sink, faucet and paper towel holder add to the chic decor without the harsh sheen of polished metal.

Vickie and Tom Kirbo used Emmye Otto Designs for the design of their renovated kitchen. Splashes of color are added to the black and white design by using small colored vases and flowers. Vases filled with wine corks are a fun and inexpensive decorating trick that will match most decors.

An expansive shoe closet and mirrored door were custom made for Vickie's bedroom. The original 1970s closets in her Vinings home were a problem for the style professional, so Vickie took special care with her closet when she and Tom renovated in 2006. "I had a major part in planning my closet with my good friend, and closet designer, Mark-Alan Harmon,” she said.

In the living room, the stone fireplace anchors its neutral-tones and acts as the room’s focal point. Yellow walls and window treatments complement the yellow in the framed artwork over the fireplace.

A light-colored cushion sits atop a wooden footstool, adding a soft touch to the dark cloth chair that it graces. Beside it, an antique chair shares the living room corner with modern, raised mirrors, reflecting this 1970s home's mix of modern and antique styles. A green vase tops a stack of books, giving the area yet another intriguing splash of color.

Pope-Ozio & Associates designed the stone courtyard outside the Vinings home. While the entire house was renovated in 2006, Vickie said that the exterior of the home and landscaping underwent the largest changes.

A long wooden table and metal lanterns make for a rustic and durable outdoor dining area. On nice evenings, the Kirbos can light the candles for a romantic outdoor picnic.

Homeowner Vickie Kirbo, a stylist and fashion blogger at kirbyourstyle.com, stands on the porch of her 1970s Vinings home with her two dogs, Bo, a yellow lab, and Lexi, a dachshund. She worked with multiple consultants to renovate the Vinings home into its beautiful current form.
