Private Quarters: Antiques characterize century-old Inman Park home

Home built in 1910 was featured in Inman Park's Tour of Homes.

The Inman Park home still has the original front rooms, including the living room. Mission-style furniture joins leather chairs, upholstered couch and oriental rugs. The 12-foot ceilings make for cooler summers and gives the rooms a larger feeling, said homeowner Morgan Shallcross.

Judi Jacobs and Morgan Shallcross have collected some of their artwork from local artists and festivals. In the living room, two pieces by Sandra Meyer, an acrylic and mixed media Atlanta artist, are on display.

During this year's Inman Park Tour of Homes, a visitor told them the green tile surrounding the fireplace in the living room and dining room is rare. A built-in bench near the fireplace offers a cozy nook, next to paintings by Sandra Meyer.

Morgan Shallcross and Judi Jacobs combined furniture from their individual homes when they moved into the Inman Park house in 2010. The coffee table is an antique warehouse cart they purchased at Scott Antique Markets and refinished.

The den is relatively new to the home, added by the previous owners and giving Morgan Shallcross and Judi Jacobs a space that opens to the kitchen for entertaining.

A pair of French doors added by previous owners connects the original office and living room.

Original items that were retained in renovations by the current and previous homeowners include pocket doors. The home was built in 1910 and also has thick plaster walls.

Homeowner Morgan Shallcross uses an antique partner desk that belonged to his grandfather and provides a tangible link to his family, he said. Above the table behind the desk, there's a drawing of Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck by Warner Bros. illustrator Chuck Jones.

A renovation by previous owners relocated the kitchen into another side of the Inman Park home, with a new island and cabinets but the original hardwood floors.

An acrylic painting by Inman Park resident Scott Eakin fills the wall leading from the den to the second floor. The den and stairs, which have bookshelves cut in, use reclaimed wood.

Built in 1910, the home has fireplaces in living areas and a guest bedroom. The fireplace, which used coal, is now sealed but still adds turn-of-the-century character to the room.

An uncovered deck, next to the screened porch, offers a spot for grilling and dining for Inman Park homeowners Morgan Shallcross and Judi Jacobs.

Outdoor living is a part of living in Inman Park, and the Craftsman-style home has a cozy screened porch.

Fluted fixtures, leaded glass transoms and 12-foot ceilings are intriguing details that sometimes are found in homes of similar age and architecture.

The homeowners show their appreciation for music with found objects, such a horn with a hole in it and a framed disc from a yard sale.

One quirky feature is a partial wall in the living room, which creates a small alcove in the main level of the Inman Park home. The reason for the partial wall is still a mystery to the homeowners.

The dining room fireplace was sealed and the firebox and chimney were removed in a prior renovation. The tile used for the surround is believed to be rare, according to the homeowners.

The office is part of the century-old home's original layout, although the built-in bookcase and French doors have been added. The old fireplace used to burn coal but has been converted to gas.

Atlanta-centric items in the office include a framed Braves jersey signed by Bobby Cox, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones and other players. Over the fireplace, there's a painting by Atlanta artist Elliott Boswell.

Cement countertops are a unique feature in the renovated kitchen, which has decorative tile backsplash, a built-in stovetop and stainless steel appliances.
