Packaging company Veritiv Corp., a new player in the ranks of metro Atlanta’s largest companies, said Thursday it plans to put its headquarters in Sandy Springs.

The company, which formed this July from a merger of Unisource Worldwide and xpedx, a former subsidiary of International Paper, will move about 150 employees to the Northpark Town Center office complex at Ga. 400 and Abernathy Road.

The move cements metro Atlanta as the headquarters of Veritiv, which previously had dual headquarters in Norcross and Loveland, Ohio. Veritiv previously had said it planned for its top executives to be based in metro Atlanta.

Veritiv sells and distributes office paper, packaging and other products to business customers, and is expected to generate about $10 billion in annual revenue. That will likely place it in the middle of the Fortune 500.

Mary A. Laschinger, Veritiv’s chairman and CEO, said in an interview the company will locate its finance, tax, treasury, legal, marketing and public affairs division at its new offices. It will take over the top three floors of the Northpark 400 building.

“This is going to give us some room to grow,” said Laschinger, who will also be based at Northpark.

Laschinger said direct access to MARTA, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and the region’s colleges and universities were top considerations. The company also wanted to be close to current workers here who live in the northern suburbs.

Veritiv has about 500 employees overall in Georgia.

Cousins Properties President and CEO Larry Gellerstedt said in an interview that larger companies are looking at buildings with direct transit access, and Northpark sits above the Sandy Springs MARTA station. Cousins acquired the complex earlier this year.

Gellerstedt said Northpark is now 91 percent leased, up from 87 percent earlier this year.
