UPS Store to test 3D printing services

UPS Store, a subsidiary of Sandy Springs-based shipping giant UPS, said it will offer 3D printing services to customers in San Diego and handful of other cities.

UPS Store, a San Diego-based subsidiary with more than 4,300 locations, said it is testing out the offering after a poll it conducted showed interest from small business owners in trying out 3D printing, which can produce objects made of layers of plastic. The company said the Stratasys printers it is testing can be used to make prototypes, engineering parts, acting props, architectural models or fixtures for cameras, lights and cables; and can print more accurately than home 3D printers.

UPS stores in San Diego, Washington D.C. and four other markets yet to be determined will sell the 3D printing services and consulting to start-ups, small businesses and retail customers.
