Sandy Springs-based UPS has announced a general freight rate increase, following a rate increase by package delivery competitor FedEx.

Effective March 31, the UPS rate will rise by 4.4 percent and apply to noncontractual less-than-truckload shipments, or shipments don't require the exclusive use of a truck, but can be delivered with other customers' packages. The increase applies to certain shipments, and UPS said customers will be able to view and download the new rates at ltl.upsfreight.com beginning March 31. The actual cost may vary based on factors such as geography, class, weight and dimensions.

FedEx is raising shipping rates effective March 31 by 3.9 percent.

On Dec. 30, UPS raised rates for its ground, air and international services by an average 4.9 percent.
