UPS said it is hiring 90,000 to 95,000 seasonal workers — nearly double the 55,000 it hired last year.

The Sandy Springs-based shipping giant said the seasonal positions are “often an entry point to long-term UPS employment.” The company says it needs package sorters, loaders, delivery helpers and drivers for the seasonal jobs throughout the United States.

The company is aiming for a recovery from delays that plagued its holiday shipping season last year and preparing for an increase in holiday shipments.

UPS said it has put in a range of improvements to fix problems, adding shifts and operating days, including nearly 50 new package sorting shifts in its hubs and full operations on the day after Thanksgiving.

It is also adding new buildings, expanding other building expansions and temporary mobile sorting and delivery centers, along with thousands of delivery vehicles, trailers and aircraft to increase capacity.

“UPS is ready to provide customers a smooth 2014 holiday experience,” the company said.

The company said it has also improved its scheduling and shipment tracking technology.
