Sandy Springs-based UPS reported a $1.2 billion quarterly profit, and said it expects 11 percent growth in December shipments during this year’s holiday shipping season.

UPS has spent much of the year working on improvements to recover from last holiday season’s shipping delays, and plans to put an extra $175 million in operating expense and $500 million in capital expenditures to prepare for the holiday shipping season and expand.

The shipping giant’s third quarter profit of $1.2 billion was up 10.7 percent from a year ago. While its total revenue increased as UPS delivered more packages around the world, its revenue per package declined as customers chose cheaper shipping options.
