UPS CEO David Abney will take on the additional role of chairman, as Scott Davis retires from the board of directors.

Abney was named CEO of the Sandy Springs-based shipping giant in 2014. Davis, who had been chairman and CEO since 2008, passed the CEO torch in 2014 and retained his chairman position.

Now, Davis is retiring from the board effective on the date of the company’s annual shareholder meeting later this year.

The board named former H.J. Heinz Co. CEO William Johnson as lead independent director of UPS, a newly created position.

“Our decision to combine the roles of board chairman and CEO is a result of thoughtful consideration of the Board’s leadership structure,” Johnson said in a written statement.
