Sandy Springs-based UPS announced it is appointing Jim Barber as chief operating officer.

Barber, who has been president of UPS International since 2013 and started at the company as a delivery driver in 1985, will now oversee distribution, forwarding, small-package delivery, brokerage and customers compliance.

The COO position has been vacant since the last COO, David Abney, was named CEO in 2014. To fill the position Barber is vacating, 27-year UPS veteran Nando Cesarone is being named international president.
