Thousands of Associated Credit Union members are subject to new restrictions on their debit cards after someone cloned dozens of the institution's ATM cards, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Thieves have used the cloned cards in a store and at ATM machines, the Norcross-based Associated told Channel 2.

“We’re really getting attacked from all fronts now,” Chief Financial Officer Tim Bridges said.

Bridges said only a small number of Associated's members were defrauded. About 100 people actually lost money, and the credit union will fully refund any fraudulent transactions.

The safeguards put in place, though, will impact many customers.

“We believe that close to half of our checking account members have been affected in some form or fashion,” he said.

ATM transactions are now limited to two per day, with a maximum of $400. Out-of-state transactions also are getting close scrutiny.
