Synovus Financial, the second-largest banking company based in Georgia, has named Allen Gula Jr. as its new chief operations officer.

Gula previously served in senior posts with Greater Bay Bancorp in San Francisco, Franklin Resources in San Mateo, Calif., as well as Ohio-based KeyCorp.

The COO position had been unfilled since Kessel Stelling was promoted last year to president and CEO of the Columbus-based company.

Synovus is the parent of community banks in five states, including Alpharetta-based Bank of North Georgia.
