Site Selection magazine named two Southern Co. utilities, Georgia Power and Alabama Power, among the 10 best in North America in terms of economic development Thursday.

The designation is based on capital investment, job creation, capital investment per capita and jobs per 10,000 in population in calendar year 2009.

It also recognizes  innovative programs and services for industrial customers and flexibility in working with corporate clients.

"The designation gauges the ability of U.S. utility companies to complement power delivery with the powers of persuasion in fostering corporate investment in their territories," the magazine said in a release.

In addition to the two Southern Co. utilities, the magazine recognized DTE Energy; Duke Energy; Entergy; Hydro-Quebec; Memphis Light, Gas & Water; Oncor Electric Delivery; PPL Electric Utilities; and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
