SunTrust Banks and NCR are joining forces in a deal that will upgrade the regional bank's network of automated teller machines, NCR announced Thursday.

Duluth-based NCR said SunTrust will unveil more than 1,600 new ATMs with technology that allows customers to deposit cash and checks at the same time. SunTrust has already started deploying the new machines in metro Atlanta and other markets.

Atlanta-based SunTrust is the largest bank by deposits in the metro area. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. New ATMs with sophisticated deposit-gathering and other customer service technologies have been a major growth area for NCR as banks roll out more self-service banking options and seek to reign in costs.
