SunTrust Banks is donating $1 million in cash and in-kind services to a program that helps “low-wealth” communities build wealth. The bank also will add counselors to its banks to help the effort.

The program, Operation HOPE, which was started in 1992, has recruited 20,000 volunteers who have counseled more than 2 million individuals. SunTrust said it will add HOPE counselors to select branches in Atlanta and Memphis as part of a pilot program this fall.

“By funding counselors within our branches, we have a significant opportunity to help people understand their options and make better-informed financial decisions when faced with a variety of life’s circumstances,” said SunTrust Chairman and CEO William H. Rogers Jr.
