A Stone Mountain ZIP code ranks second in the nation on the list of places with good elementary schools and affordable housing.
The area around Wynbrooke Elementary – 30087 – matches a well-rated “theme school,” solid household income and a modest list price on houses, according to a study by Realtor.com, a California-based resource for housing information.
A section of Woodstock – 30189 – ranked in the top ten for middle and high schools, according to the same study.
The search for the right school district has long been seen as a crucial part of the hunt from the right home. And generally, that notion is so much a part of the pursuit that the property values are measurably higher in the neighborhoods around the good schools.
“When searching for a new home, finding something affordable in a good school district with family-friendly features, such as large backyards, tops the list of homebuyer priorities,” said Javier Vivas, manager of economic research for realtor.com.
Realtor.com analyzed ZIP codes within the top metropolitan areas that contained at least one public or public charter school that was highly ranked by GreatSchools. And the areas around those schools had typically higher income residents.
So some areas might have better schools. And some will have more affordable housing. But none will have both.
“These [Georgia] markets offer strong public schools and affordable homes, making them a great fit for homebuyers with elementary school-age children,” Vivas said.
