Still negotiating on nuke loans

Southern Co. is asking for another 30 days to negotiate the terms of a $8 billion loan guarantee offer from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The guarantee is for the planned expansion of the Vogtle nuclear plant near Augusta, where the company is building two new reactors.

The company originally was to either accept or reject the offer next month, chief financial officer Paul Bowers said Wednesday. The guarantees would go into effect only after the company gets its combined construction and operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which Bowers said will be in late 2011 or early 2012.
