Southwest adds mobile boarding passes in Atlanta

Southwest Airlines said it now allows the use of mobile boarding passes in Atlanta.

That means passengers taking domestic flights can check in and show electronic boarding passes on their mobile devices at security checkpoints and gates at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The move comes after Dallas-based Southwest launched a mobile boarding pass pilot program in Austin, Houston and Dallas last November and expanded it to other airports. The airline plans to eventually expand mobile boarding passes to all U.S. cities.

The mobile boarding passes will not be available to passengers on AirTran Airways, which Southwest acquired. The AirTran name will be retired after the last AirTran flight Dec. 28, 2014.
