President Obama's administration just unveiled a new online site to help parents and students compare colleges. But the new College Scorecard doesn't include a college ranking, as the president had originally intended.

AJC business columnist Matt Kempner tried the site out and found it's still difficult to make good comparisons based on what students plan to major in. The tough part is comparing the true bang for the buck offered by different colleges.

He should know. Kempner went a little overboard recently in helping his own kids hunt for universities. They visited more than 50 campuses. He came away with some tips on what to look for (and what not to get mesmerized by).
