Flooring giant Shaw Industries plans to hire 70 people as part of an expansion of its recycling operations in Ringgold, state and company officials announced Monday.

Dalton-based Shaw will invest $17 million in the new operations, which will be located at the company’s former Plant 37, about 100 miles north of downtown Atlanta.

“Evergreen Ringgold expands our efforts to keep end-of-use carpet out of landfills,” Paul Murray, Shaw vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs, said in a news release. “By expanding our recycling portfolio, we are illustrating our continued commitment to converting something that historically may have been seen as waste into a resource that has a longer life in the economy.”

The expansion is part of Shaw’s investment in recycling and part of a certification called “Cradle to Cradle,” the company said.

“Shaw has been a valuable longtime partner to the City of Ringgold,” Nick Millwood, the city’s vice-mayor, said in the release. “Their new commitment ensures our community will continue to grow and keep jobs close to home.”
