A Gwinnett County firm has acquired a large quarry near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Stephens MDS said Thursday it has purchased a 100-acre granite quarry in College Park from Bluegrass Materials Co. A price was not disclosed. The site previously provided fill material for the fifth runway the airport.

Stephens MDS said in a news release it owns property surrounding the quarry that is used as a site for disposal and recycling of inert building materials like concrete and asphalt.

“By combining these operations, when the housing, commercial and infrastructure sectors rebound, we will be in position to be a leading provider of virgin and recycled construction aggregate in the region,” company CEO John D. Stephens said in the release.
