PepsiCo plans to introduce a new mid-calorie cola this summer, Beverage Digest reported. "Pepsi Next" will have 60 calories per can, or about 43 percent of the 150 calories in regular Pepsi, according to the trade publication. Bottlers say PepsiCo anticipates volume of about 30 million cases for the new brand's first full year in the market, Beverage Digest said. There will be a large advertising and marketing push behind the brand.

Coca-Cola Co and PepsiCo both experimented with mid-calorie colas in 2004, to limited success. Coca-Cola's C2 and Pepsi Edge both grew strongly but started to drop off and were discontinued within a few years.
