Former Dalton Mayor David Pennington’s campaign said it would pay a $125 fine for missing a filing deadline after he qualified to challenge Gov. Nathan Deal in the Republican primary.

James Stein of St. Marys lodged a complaint last week claiming that Pennington failed to file his financial disclosure as required by state ethics rules within seven days of qualifying.

Pennington filed paperwork to run on March 11 and records show he filed his disclosure shortly before midnight on March 19, though it later had to be amended to include key details such as his assets and earnings.

Pennington aide David Allen initially said in a statement that the document was filed on time and blamed “technical glitches” on the state ethics website. Hours later, though, he said that the campaign has agreed to pay the fine after discussions with ethics staffers.
