Local job seekers got welcome holiday season news this week with the announcement that electronic payments processor Vesta plans to open a call center in Alpharetta and hire 300 employees.
The Portland, Ore., company is currently in the process of hiring a dozen workers to start Jan. 3, and it plans to hire the remaining employees between Jan. 10 and the end of March.
The main job to be filled is order processing agent. Duties include answering incoming telephone calls, processing customer orders and answering questions. A high school education or equivalent is required. About 95 percent of the positions will be order processing jobs.
The pay will start at $9, but can go higher with incentives. Pay for bilingual hires starts at $10 an hour.
Local development officials called the Tuesday announcement significant.
"News of a company committing to the area and doing this level of hiring is just what we need, especially going into the holidays and the new year," said Tedra Cheatham, vice president and chief operating officer of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.
Vesta processes secure payments for goods and services through channels including the Internet, mobile phones, retail point of sale and mobile commerce applications.
Sanjay Khare, chief financial officer for Vesta, said the company might bring more sales and account executives to the area.
"We certainly intend to expand the facility," he said.
