Oglethorpe University and Atlanta-based Gables Residential plan to develop an apartment project with classroom space on land the university owns in Brookhaven.

The project, to be known as Gables Oglethorpe at Hermance Drive and Peachtree Road, is expected to open in August 2015 with 374 apartment homes in two buildings.

“Oglethorpe’s residence halls are near capacity and we are need of additional space to accommodate our continued growth,” Oglethorpe President Lawrence Schall said in a news release. “Our partnership with Gables Residential will allow us to fulfill that need as the new community will offer an alternative living choice for our students while shifting the financial risk away from the university.”

Oglethorpe, a private institution, was founded in 1835 and has about 1,100 students. The university plans to grow enrollment to 1,500 by 2020, according to the release. The new residential towers will feature the campus’ traditional Gothic architecture.
