SunTrust Banks’ newly appointed chief executive has been named to its board of directors, the company said Monday.

William Rogers Jr., who became CEO on June 1, filled an open position on the Atlanta-based regional bank's board.

Rogers was named James Wells III’s successor in April. Wells remains executive chairman of the board through Dec. 31, when he is scheduled to retire.

Rogers retains the title of SunTrust president.
