Significant changes are coming to the Country Club of the South, according to its new owner ClubCorp, Inc.

The 18-hole course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1987, will undergo a “seven-figure capital investment,” said Eric Affeldt, president and chief executive of Dallas-based ClubCorp.

The sale of the club in Johns Creek was finalized Tuesday night and announced Wednesday morning, Affeldt said. The price was not disclosed.

“Most of the people I’ve heard from are very excited about the new owners,” said Tom Otero, an employee of Edwin Watts Golf Shops. “And after the year or so they’ve had there, it should be a very good thing.”

Affeldt said current members of the club were notified more than a month ago that ClubCorp had a contract to purchase the course and other club amenities.

Now that the sale has been finalized, current members will be asked to “rejoin” the club, for legal purposes, Affeldt said.

“Our bylaws and membership documents may be a little bit different than what they had previously,” he said. “But there is no additional cost associated with that.”

Renovations to the club will include the golf course, including the greens and improvements to the turf grass, cart paths, clubhouse interior and tennis facility,” according to a news release from ClubCorp. Renovations are expected to start immediately, the company said.

The course is the latest addition ClubCorp's portfolio of eight properties in the metro Atlanta area, which include the newly combined Commerce and 191 clubs in downtown Atlanta, the Country Club of Gwinnett in Snellville and Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge.

The change in ownership does not directly affect the more than 700 homes that make up the affluent Country Club of the South neighborhood, which is separate from the operation of the club.

The club was previously owned by Country Club of the South Inc., before it was foreclosed upon by The Bank of North Georgia earlier this year.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
