W Hotel opens helipad

The helipad atop the W Hotel and Residences in downtown Atlanta was officially opened Tuesday, and W developer Hal Barry was on the inaugural flight.

Katherine "Deltalina" Lee, a Delta Air Lines flight attendant, talks to guests. She was part of the inaugural trip to the W's helipad.

Barry celebrates with champagne on top of the W. "I've been in a lot of helicopters before and this was great," he said. "Atlanta is not helicopter friendly at this time. We're going to change that." At right is helicopter pilot Michael A. Russell.

Helipads are the latest amenity offered by Atlanta hotels to distinguish themselves in the competitive lodging sector.
