Georgia had the fourth-highest rate of bankruptcy filings in the country for the 12 months ended March 31, a study by the American Bankruptcy Institute shows.

The 65,990 bankruptcy filings in Georgia represent a 26 percent increase from the same 12-month period a year earlier, as the economic downturn continues.

The trend mirrors what's occurring nationally. The 12-month filing total of 1.2 million, nationally, represents an increase of more than 33 percent.

The state with the highest foreclosure filings is Tennessee followed by Nevada and then Alabama.
