Georgia-Pacific will invest $37 million in an Arkansas lumber operation to expand capacity by about 60 percent.

The project in Gurdon, in the southwest part of the state, is expected to be completed in third quarter 2015.

Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific is also considering investing $20 million to expand a nearby plywood mill to increase its capacity and improve efficiency to reduce emissions.

Georgia-Pacific employs about 2,700 in Arkansas, where it has eight facilities. The company said 665 of the workers are at the Gurdon-area mills.

In August, the company announced it would invest more than $375 million in a south Alabama plant that produces linerboard and cartonboard used in making boxes. The investment will make the plant in Brewton more energy efficient, Georgia-Pacific said.
