For the second time in a week, Georgia Power’s Plant Vogtle near Augusta had problems that knocked a nuclear unit offline. A Georgia Power spokesman said there were no radiological releases or injuries associated with the incidents. On Saturday, the plant’s Unit 1 had mechanical problems tied to a turbine as the unit was being brought on line after scheduled refueling, according to the company. As of Monday afternoon, the unit was generating limited power, but was not feeding to the electric grid. Earlier last week, Vogtle’s Unit 2 reactor had an automatic shutdown that the company said was “due to a water level change in the feed water system.” As of Monday afternoon, that unit was in the process of being brought back to full power.
