A new FedEx Ground facility in Norcross will eventually house more than 500 employees, the vice president of the company's southern region said Friday.

At a groundbreaking for the new distribution center, vice president Bob Holcombe said it will eventually employ 550 people and an additional 175 independent contractors. When the facility opens in the fall of 2012, some employees there will be moved from another Norcross facility.

Holcombe said it is part of a national expansion for FedEx.

Gov. Nathan Deal, at the groundbreaking, said the expansion further shows the importance of Atlanta and Georgia as a freight and logistics hub. UPS is based in Sandy Springs and FedEx has three other facilities in metro Atlanta.
